Advice sought: Yale R1/R2 interview applicants

I would appreciate if anyone on this community (or reading this blog) who has ever interviewed or been invited to interview at Yale can get back to me.

I would also request fellow applicants who have been invited to other schools, to give me any tips and suggestions they may have for interviews.

A key question which I had been thinking all along(though was never invited to interview before this!) was, what if I am asked:

"How many schools have you applied to?"

Considering that I have applied to 8 schools (5 in R1) and Yale application was submitted in R2- If I am truthful, will it send a wrong impression?

If I lie, do they have a way to figure out?

There is so much going on in the mind now.......I am happy!

I worried about that question too, but I was never asked. I think, whatever you say, you need to show that your applications reflect a thought process and that you chose schools based on your goals. If I were you, I'd say "3 in this round. I applied to some schools in round 1 and was not successful, and I realized that my weakness was [XYZ] and I have really reflected on that and improved my presentation of my candidacy. I am glad that I did not apply to Yale in R1 because now I see that it is a better school for me because [blah blah blah]". It's all about spin!

First off, they won't ask the number schools to which you've applied. And if they do, I'd walk out - that's not the type of school you want to attend. This is their way of getting to know YOU, not their competition! I've found most these interviews are blind and run along the same lines as their essay questions. Often including such topics as leadership, why the specific school, and why now. My advice, know your story cold as well as examples you can utilize should you need some. Understand the school and why you're applying to that school. What "unique" attribute differentiates that school or do they pride themselves on. ie. Darden - network, faculty, and the case method. I made sure to hit on all three and in a personal way.

Also - check out clear admit: http://www.clearadmit.com/wiki/index.php?title=YaleInterview

GOOD LUCK!

Nobody is going to bother looking into where you've applied.

Hello... i am a R1 admit so was in a similar boat to you only a few (albeit) long weeks ago.
In answer to your question i would advise you to pretend that you were the interviewer. Ask yourself do I think that this candidate really wants to come to Yale SOM? If so why has s/he applied to 7 other schools? If you are asked the question (and decide to tell the truth) you must show in your answer that you view Yale as your first choice and that you have a logical reason why you have chosen the schools you have. As a an example, when I applied I was asked this question in my interview and said that I had applied to Dartmouth and Stanford for the strong CSR aspect and small class size and also Wharton and HBS because of their global brand which would open doors. I come from the UK and so international brand is very important and all of these schools have it in abundance. I don’t think this was a particularly good answer but the point is that I had logic (at least in my head) as to why I had applied to the schools. So long as you have logic as to why you applied to the school you chose and can illustrate this then you will be fine...
I would however also add that the Yale interview is completely blind and that the person who interviews you will not make the final decision on your application nor will s/he see you application.
Good luck and I will continue to read your blog to see how you get on... I hope to see you in the fall at one of the other schools to which you applied that I will be attending (ps- I posted my interview noted on clear admit wiki).

Hey Great Blog! I don't know if you've been interviewed or not. If it helps, I interviewed with Wharton yesterday and I was not asked that question. However, I was prepared for it. I think the key is to know what Yale has that other schools don't have ... and then emphasize that part all through your interview. I wish you luck ... keep us posted

dude heard anything yet ?

@yeshu..no man nothing yet :) I guess most of the decisions will go out on the decision date itself..the wait is too agonizing!! Best of luck to you....
